SUMMER NEWSLETTER
D
o you remember what life was like in the summer when you were a kid? As I reflect on this time I remember many fun-filled days that included swimming in the lake, hiking to the meadow, new kids to hang out with and fishing down at the bridge. Life was simple in those days and it seems that the biggest decision we ever had to make was trying to decide if our friends should stay at our house or we should stay at one of our friend’s. I can remember secretly hoping for summer to go on forever because we had so much free time and everyday we experienced at least one or two great adventures, lots of playtime and endless exploring. Whatever our summer days brought to us when our parents called us into the house we were so exhausted we could barely put our pajamas on! Tired to our inner core, one more event would usually occur especially if friends were sleeping over. This event I shall refer to as a child’s best nightcap! A super-sized elixir of silly laughter and giggling that went on endlessly until our bellies ached! We never seemed to really know what we were laughing about but it didn’t matter - the right ingredients to start it and keep it going were there! I think what it meant was that we had just had one of the best days of our lives so far!
With summer in the forefront many of us will be looking forward to more play-time and less work. It’s always so good to see adults relaxing and allowing themselves more playtime! This additional playtime for adults is much more evident in the summertime! Golf courses, boat filled lakes, baseball diamonds, soccer fields, campgrounds and numerous other places. In many of these adult playgrounds you will often hear gales of laughter, hooting and hollering and inside you know these are the familiar sounds of summer that often connect us to our playful days of past.
I think there is something quite attractive and fascinating about adults who share their playfulness and childlike characteristics regardless of what position they hold. The Dali Lama is a perfect example of this and he is often referred to by others as, ‘humorous and childlike’ in nature. Mother Teresa was said to be like this as well as numerous other gurus. A great number of religions and spiritual practices agree that to become more childlike in our nature and thinking is one of the great attributes of reaching higher levels of spirituality. So with that thought in mind here are some simple little steps to bring out your inner child, hopefully relax you, put a smile on your face and whatever else!
Next time the clouds are billowing in the sky lay down on the ground and watch the cloud formations, I could do this for hours if time permitted. It’s so fascinating how clouds move in and out of shapes. Talk about getting relaxed and grounded at the same time! Watching the stars from a laying down position is also amazingly calming and relaxing. I can promise you some big beautiful sighs as you lay there and let go of your adult world of stress and chaos. Enjoy the releases.

Find a creek, throw in a stick and follow it for a far as you can as it bounces and drifts in the water. When you loose track of it just sit and watch the water bubble over the rocks. Being close to water is one of our most free, naturally healing and relaxing remedies.

When was the last time you climbed a tree? It’s quite the view from the top branches and it is quite a thrill so go ahead - I double dare you! When you find the branch to hold you, scoot out far enough to let your feet dangle. If you’re lucky enough a nice breeze may come along and bring you into a gentle rocking motion. If you can make it up the tree alone you are awesome! If you make it down the tree alone you are REALLY amazing! Maybe you’ll be inspired to plant a tree and watch it grow up.
People pay good money to have the experience of a mud bath so the next time you see a mud puddle, peel off your footwear and stick your feet in. Let the sun warmed mud squeeze through your toes for free!! While you are at it rub a little Alberta wild rose on your arms and face for some natural flower essence!
Next time you are in the vicinity of a playground give yourself a ride on a swing. If possible have someone push you on the swing, it’s sure to give you such a bubble in your belly you’ll be laughing before you know it. I still can’t believe we used to stand up and swing so high the chains would become slack. Kids really are so trusting and brave!
For today let the rest of the world be serious. Get out and play! Who knows what you may learn or find out about your self. I hope as you try some of these kid experiences in your adult body you will have some delightful and playful moments accompanied with some great big belly laughs.
